Solana Radio — Two-Host Script (English, ~10 minutes)

Welcome back to the show. Today's theme is Solana — the blockchain famous for one thing above all: speed.

Speed, huh. Every blockchain says it's fast. My microwave also says it's fast.

Fair point. So today, no slogans. By the end of this episode, you'll know exactly what "fast" means, the clock trick that made it possible, and why that very trick is now retiring.

Wait, retiring? The thing that made it fast is going away?

Hold that thought. First, the numbers. Bitcoin produces a block about every ten minutes. Ethereum, about every twelve seconds. Solana? A new block roughly every four hundred milliseconds.

Four hundred milliseconds... that's less than half a second. So in one Bitcoin block, how many Solana blocks fit?

About one thousand five hundred. Picture it as a heartbeat. In the time Bitcoin's heart beats once, Solana's heart beats one thousand five hundred times.

That's not a heartbeat, that's a hummingbird having an espresso.

And here's a subtlety most people miss. There are two kinds of "done" on a blockchain. When your wallet says "confirmed," that happens in under a second on Solana. But the true, irreversible "done" — what engineers call finality — currently takes about twelve point eight seconds.

So my wallet is being a little... optimistic?

That's literally the term — optimistic confirmation. And remember that twelve point eight seconds, because shrinking it is the big story later in the show.

Noted. Okay, so how did Solana get this fast in the first place?

With a clock. In 2017, founder Anatoly Yakovenko had an unusual idea called Proof of History. Before the network agrees on anything, it first proves the passage of time itself.

Proving... time? How do you prove time?

Imagine a machine that stamps every event, in order, where each stamp is mathematically built from the previous stamp. It's a chain of stamps. Every computer in the network holds the same chain.

And what happens if someone sneaks in and rewrites an old stamp?

Then every stamp after that point changes. Their copy no longer matches everyone else's, and the network rejects the whole forgery instantly. The real chain doesn't even slow down. Tampering isn't just forbidden — it's self-revealing.

So the fraud basically raises its own hand and says, "It was me."

Exactly. Now, here's the twist I promised. That invention — the clock at the heart of Solana — is retiring. The upgrade is called Alpenglow.

Why retire the thing that works?

Because of that twelve point eight seconds. Today, validators — the computers that run the network — cast their votes as transactions written into the blocks themselves. Those votes actually make up the majority of all transactions on Solana. Alpenglow moves the voting off the chain, into direct messages, and targets finality of about one hundred to one hundred fifty milliseconds.

From twelve point eight seconds to zero point one five seconds? That's around eighty times faster.

Right. The new voting system is called Votor, and it's beautifully simple. Round one: if eighty percent of the stake approves a block, it's final, instantly. If approval lands between sixty and eighty percent, there's a second round, which needs a fresh sixty percent. Below sixty in round one, the block is skipped. One or two rounds. That's the whole game.

And what if some validators are, let's say, up to no good?

Great question. Alpenglow is designed with a rule people call twenty plus twenty. Up to twenty percent of the stake can be actively malicious — voting falsely — and safety still holds. On top of that, another twenty percent can simply be offline, and the network still keeps finalizing new blocks.

So forty percent of the network can be missing in action, and it just... keeps going?

Keeps going. But the two limits don't share. Push the malicious side past twenty percent, and safety itself is at risk. Two separate budgets, protecting two different things.

Okay. Speed, check. Safety, check. Now walk me through the life of one transaction. I tap "send" — then what?

Here's where Solana breaks with tradition. Most chains have a mempool — think of it as a big shared waiting room where transactions sit around hoping to be picked.

Like a lottery in a bus station.

More or less. Solana skips the shared waiting room — to be precise, the gateways and block builders do keep their own short queues, but there is no single big pool where everyone waits. Your signed transaction goes through a gateway server — called an R-P-C node — and gets forwarded straight to the validator whose turn it is to build the next block. That validator is called the leader, and the leader schedule is known in advance.

And if everyone shows up at once? Say a hot new token launches and the network gets slammed?

Then you can attach a small priority fee to move up the queue. But here's the elegant part — fee markets on Solana are local. If one popular app is congested, fees spike in that app's lane only. Your unrelated payment somewhere else stays cheap.

So one crowded restaurant doesn't raise prices for the whole city.

Perfect analogy. And there's one more superpower: parallel execution. Transactions that touch different accounts run at the same time, side by side. Only when two transactions touch the same account do they wait in line.

Multiple supermarket checkouts instead of one.

Which raises the question — why is that even possible on Solana when it's hard elsewhere? The answer is the way data is organized. On Solana, everything is an account. Think of accounts as coin lockers. Your wallet is a locker. A program — what other chains call a smart contract — is a locker containing only code.

Only code? Where does the program keep its data?

In a separate locker. Code and state are split apart. And because they're split, the network can see exactly which lockers each transaction touches, and run the non-overlapping ones simultaneously.

Okay, locker world. Then my tokens — my stablecoins, my meme coins — those all live together in my wallet locker, right?

This is the misconception of the day, so listen closely. No. Every token type gets its own separate locker, called a token account, and each one holds exactly one type. Receive a brand-new token, and a brand-new locker is created on the spot. Your wallet doesn't hold tokens directly — it owns a collection of lockers.

So my wallet is less like a purse and more like... a landlord.

A landlord of tiny vaults, yes. And for the curious, there's one more kind of address worth knowing: a P-D-A, short for Program Derived Address. A normal address always has a private key. A P-D-A is deliberately generated so that no private key can exist at all — which means no human can ever sign for it. Only the program controls it. That little trick quietly secures a huge amount of what runs on Solana.

An address that nobody — nobody — has the key to. Spooky, but useful. Alright: who actually uses all this speed?

Wherever actions are frequent and small. Payments and stablecoins above all — in February 2026, Solana was number one among all blockchains in stablecoin transfer volume, at roughly six hundred fifty billion dollars in a single month. Then decentralized finance and trading, real-world infrastructure networks known as DePIN, games, and N-F-Ts.

Impressive. But let me play skeptic. I've heard people throw around "sixty-five thousand transactions per second." Is that real?

Time for honesty. Three numbers, same network. Real user throughput: usually around one thousand nine hundred transactions per second. Include the validators' vote transactions, and the whole network is over four thousand. And that famous sixty-five thousand? A theoretical design ceiling — not a measured, live figure.

So when someone quotes a number, the right question is: which number?

Always. And skeptics deserve the history, too. In its early years Solana had a rough stretch — several full network outages. The last one was in February 2024. Since then: none, as of this recording in mid-2026.

And the road ahead?

Three layers, all accelerating at once. Inside each validator, a new high-performance engine called Firedancer — the full version already carries a low double-digit share of stake, and counting its hybrid sibling, estimates run from about a quarter up to forty percent. At the consensus layer, Alpenglow — governance-approved with over ninety-eight percent of the vote, in testing since May 2026, aiming for the main network within the year. And between the validators, a dedicated fiber-optic network called Double Zero, already connecting roughly sixty percent of the stake.

Faster engines, faster agreement, faster wiring. All three at once.

That's the whole picture. Solana today: blocks every four hundred milliseconds, a clock that proves time, no waiting room, everything in lockers — and an upgrade path that could make "done" happen faster than a blink.

I came in thinking "fast" was a marketing word. I'm leaving thinking it's an engineering diagram.

Then our work here is done. If you want to see all of this — the heartbeats, the lockers, the voting rounds — there's a free interactive page where you can play with every single demo yourself. The link is right there in the episode description, and it works in five languages.
